Best of Year Winner, Hospitality: Hotel - RESORT: WOHA: Alila Villas Uluwatu, Bali, Indonesia, Bali, Indonesia
Beach living has rarely been more appealing and eco-friendly than at these 50 suites and 35 open-air villas tucked into a hillside above limestone cliffs. Preservation of the dry terrain played a major role in site-planning, and WOHA directors Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell chose only local species for landscaping. Living plants aren't the only natives. Sustainable timber includes a recycled hardwood, ulin, and bamboo for exterior walls and interior screens, while craftsmen in Bali and Java made the furnishings. Resembling the loosely piled terraces built by Balinese farmers, the villas' roofs of limestone and volcanic rock collect rainwater for recycling. Bridges span saltwater gardens to link the villas. And each has its own pool and cabana overlooking the vast blue sea.
