Room To Grow

IN A PREWAR Manhattan apartment, Shea Murdock and Robert Young of Murdock Young Architects were challenged with converting a snug-as-a-bug, closetless maid's room into a petite suite for a young girl. "It was so small that a normal closet would have imposed in an unpleasant way," says Murdock. "Borrowing space from the already tiny bathroom seemed a little crazy." But it was the only option. The architects removed the tub to gain enough space for a walk-in closet, which they tucked behind a Dutch door with built-in cubbies, then tiled the entire bathroom, installing a floor drain and hand shower so the room itself functioned as the stall—just like in a boat.
