John Hutton is one of the most recognized and prolific furniture designers of the past three decades. Donghia was just 12 years old when he joined the company in 1980. As design director, he tempered sleek simplicity with personal observations of history and nature. The Hutton signature also blended luxury and comfort, priorities driven home by a high-style recliner introduced in 1995.
A 1994 collection of outdoor furniture in Indonesian teak marked the beginning of his long association with Sutherland. In addition, he worked for Holly Hunt and Hickory Business Furniture, among many manufacturers. His interiors clients included Diana Ross, Liza Minnelli, Steve Martin, Ralph Lauren, and Barbara Walters. "I design first for humans, second for industry," he once told Newsday.
Hutton, who died on August 17 from complications of surgery, was born in 1947 and graduated from New York's Fashion Institute of Technology in 1969. He is survived by his wife, Brenda, and their sons, Douglas and John.
