New York's Museum of Modern Art and the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center have selected a concept from Los Angeles firm Xefirotarch for the annual courtyard installation coinciding with P.S.1's summerlong music events.
For the past five years, as part of the Young Architects Program, the museums have held a competition for firms to make over P.S.1's courtyard. The public enjoys the display while attending the festival and exhibits.
Xefirotarch's entry, SUR, proposes a continuous red-and-white fiberglass-and-rubber base, with raised areas for sitting, under an undulating aluminum canopy wrapped in latex and spandex. Officials chose it from 18 submissions. Entries represented work by established firms as well as recent graduates.
The five finalists' projects will be on view at MoMA, June 22–August 22. Xefirotarch's installation will be open June 26 through September.
