Vitra Polder XL Sofa
A couple of weeks ago we ordered a Vitra Polder XL sofa for a client. It was the client’s idea, and even though it totally mucked up the design direction, I was thrilled because I have always admired the design of this sofa by my favorite designer Hella Jongerius. The design of the house, however, had been going in an very different direction, and the sofa did not fit the aesthetic. However, as soon as it was thrown into the mix, it seemed very natural. We did a spontaneous about turn, changed our design compasses, and carried on.
It’s a wonderful thing when a client has something they really like and want to incorporate into their home. It is even better when the designer actually loves it, too. Being flexible and being able to change the course is essential in this field. I think 2009 is going to be all about fidgeting with our compasses a bit as we carry on.
