Designer Construction Site
I was up in Hudson this week, anxious to see and photograph all the progress. I brought along decorative accessories and Carlos Mota, stylist-to-the-stars, to help distinguish the site as a "designer construction site."
Maybe a little pretentious and slightly cliché, but a classical bust holding down a set of drawings on a saw horse would be nice. Colored hard hats hanging on a row of nails, construction chic at its best. We discussed painting horizontal bands (a Siskin Valls signature) on the portable john, but agreed it might be a little too much.
I tried to talk architect Joan Chan into wearing a pair of heavy black round framed glasses, but she refused. The carefully placed plastic wild flowers in the mounds of dirt not only would give the splash of color needed, but also served to suggest to the readers that Spring is approaching (until they start to use Scratch n’ Sniff paper in magazines, why not plastic flowers?). Needed for sure, a Martha Stewart moment of Mitch and his crew, Keith, breaking bread with Joan and myself, sharing laughs.
Well none of this happened, not enough progress to photograph. If this keeps up I’m afraid Cindy might fire me. She hired me to do a blog on the building of my house. Unless contractor Mitch hurries, this blog venture could turn into an epic; “Century 21, The First Ten Years, A Perspective from Brokeback Manor." I think they were intending informative pieces on construction rather than the social, political, and economic commentaries I have been offering weekly.
I hope Cindy realizes that even though the blogs are not exactly documenting a work in progress, they are working to better the public’s image of design and designers. For example, last week’s “Jail Cell Research", clearly demonstrates the relevance of design and the far reaching implications it has on our culture – the decoration of Bernie Madoff’s jail cell spinning off new T.V. reality shows like Cell Block Make Over.
Just to be sure, I better not quit my day job - off to the D&D building.
