NoMix Toilets Save Water in Europe
Between efficient lighting, smart cars, and green energy, there’s an incremental improvement in our own homes that may have gone overlooked. NoMix toilets quite simply, separate #1 and #2, siphoning urine into a separate holding tank. The benefits may be bigger than just saving water, as some experts say that municipal wastewater plants would have a significantly easier task of processing waste separately, producing more methane that could be turned into electricty, and could more easily extract nutrients like phosphorous and nitrogen for fertilizers. So far, 7 European countries have signed on for the pilot program, and recently reported, "NoMix-technology is well accepted; around 80% of users liked the idea, 75−85% were satisfied with design, hygiene, smell, and seating comfort of NoMix-toilets, 85% regarded urine-fertilizers as good idea (50% of farmers), and 70% would purchase such food." Perhaps some day we’ll see these in the US??
