The architecture of sofa cushion forts
I stumbled upon this collection of photographs of sofa cushion forts, and was immediately brought back to my childhood days of disassembling my parents’ couch. My sister and I would build pyramids, long and low "ranch-style homes," and multi-story modern strucures years before I ever thought about attending architecture school. Though we might not consider this design today, I’m a huge fan of the sofa fort, as it speaks to our almost primal need as humans and "designers-at-heart" to manipulate and improve our immediate environments with skill and ingenuity (and in a way, what’s greener than using what you’ve got in the living room?). Check out the full collection of forts and their architectural critique (ranging from the success of tensegrity structures to the underuse of pillow elements). And if you need a break from your big successful design practice, maybe take a lunch break by the sofa, and let the creativity flow.
