Floorboards with Natural Lines
While straight-edged floorboards are easy to install and technologically logical, a new Dutch Company, Bolefloor, has a new take: use the natural curves of the wood to dictate how floor boards fit together. The method results in less cut wood waste and increasing the output from a single tree. The method has been in use previously by a few craftsmen, but the company believes that it is worthy of a mass market output. In order to cut the boards, Bolefloor uses wood scanning and CAD/CAM technology to detect the wood's natural edges and make the best cut based on the location of imperfections. Currently Bolefloor is only working with oak, but hopefully other types of wood will be available soon. Much more info on their website here.
