ASID NY Presents "Exploring Universal Design"
When: May 9, 2013
Location: Mohawk Group Showroom: 71 West 23rd St, 18th Floor New York, New York, United States of America
The New York Metro Chapter of the American Society of Interior Design (ASID NY) is hosting a mini-exposition called “Exploring Universal Design: Get with the Program/Prepare for the Future.” The daylong event will serve as an educational forum on the importance of designing for a broad range of people, regardless of levels of ability or mobility, age, gender or physical stature without the need for adaptation or specialization. It will include a series of seminars including two IDCEC CEU-accredited sessions, an informative panel discussion, tabletop displays from leading manufacturers as well as plenty of networking opportunities during breakfast, lunch and cocktails. Held on Thursday, May 9 from 9:15AM to 6:30PM at the Mohawk Group Showroom (71 West 23rd St), it offers ASID members, non-members and students the opportunity to hear from industry professionals and see some of the latest products from ASID NY industry partners.
The seminars kick of with a CEU entitled “Design for All,” presented by Jason McNeely, CAPS specialist and sales training manager for Hansgrohe/Axor. The course covers the importance of universal design for a rapidly growing aging population. Shortly after, Crestron Electronic’s Ami Wright will tackle “Interior Technology 101.” Also accredited, the session helps bridge the gap between design and technology. Later in the day, Matthew Waletzke, building biology consultant and founder of Healthy Dwellings, will take the floor to share his holistic approach to health and wellness as well as the ins and outs of “Detoxifying Your Home.”
The afternoon panel discussion delves deeper into universal design as experts in design, architecture, research and medicine come together to talk about the topic as it relates to their respective field. Panelists include: Christine Hunter, AIA, LEED AP, principal of Magnusson Architecture and Planning; Rosemary Bakker, ASID, MS, designer, author, speaker and research associate in Gerontologic Design at Weill Cornell Medical College; Lorraine G. Hiatt, PhD, environmental gerontologist of planning, research and design for aging; Clifford Starr, lighting designer, co-owner of Lighting by Gregory. The session will be moderated by Nigel Maynard, editor-in-chief, Residential Building Products and Technology Magazine. The conversation will be followed by a Q&A period. In addition to questions from the crowd, the speakers will also be responding to inquiries from social media. Attendees are encouraged to tweet (@ASIDNY) their questions to ASID NY using hashtag #UNIVDES in the days leading up to the event.
The event aims to bring all the players in the industry together to put universal design principles into practice and ultimately help every client live better. In addition to the outstanding programming, attendees will be able to talk to top manufacturers and distributors including Hansgrohe/Axor, Stone Source, daltile and Crestron Electronics as well as leading specialists like Fabra-Cleen about their relevant product lines and sustainable solutions.
